AYSO REGION 14

Referee Clinics

Referee Program

Becoming a referee is easy and it is quite enjoyable as you get to see the game from a unique perspective. We offer a class for beginners that introduces you to all of the basics and we provide you with expert training to make you feel right at home.

Who can become a referee? – Anyone age 12 and older can be a referee!
How much does it cost? – ZERO DOLLARS! It’s FREE!
Is refereeing fun? – Yes!
Is refereeing easy? – Yes!

Is being a referee stressful? – No, not at all! 😉 We will provide in-class and in-game training to make you comfortable in all game situations. You can even be assigned a veteran mentor that will follow alongside your first games!

How much time does it take to become a referee? – You must take the AYSO Regional Referee training course. The course has two options. The first option is a full day course. The second option is a half day/half online course. We’ll provide food and soda/water to keep you focused. You do have to complete some online courses as well. These courses focus on kids safety and take an hour-ish. After completing these steps, you'll be certified as an AYSO Regional Referee. As you referee your first game, it will last approximately 1-hour.

What about the referee uniform? – Region 14 will provide you with everything you need!

When do I ref? – You get to choose your games, well...kinda. Each week a schedule is sent out with available games. Choose which games work best for you and we’ll fit you in!

How do we celebrate? – At the conclusion of our season, we will celebrate at our annual Referee Appreciation Dinner to honor everyone for all of their hard work with awards and prizes.

Here’s what you need to do to become a Region 14 Referee!

- You need to log-in or register. Visit www.ayso14.org and Click ‘Log in’ or ‘Register Now’. If you’ve never registered before, you’ll need to do that first. You’ll be directed to Sports Connect to register.

- Click on the "My Account" button in the upper right of the page. This will bring you to your volunteer profile.

- On the left-hand side of the page, click on the "AYSOU" link.

- On the left-hand side of the page, click on "Training Event."

- In the location, set the distance to 10 km or 25 km (depending on how far you're willing to travel) and set the location to "Torrance CA, USA."

- You can now see on the calendar a full list of local AYSO Course offerings. Hover over each class to see the details. You want to find a "Regional Referee" course, either the "Full In-Person Course" or the "Online + In-Person Companion Course." You can also type in "Regional Referee" into the "Courses" search bar to help narrow it down.

- Once you find the course that works for you, click on it in the calendar. This will bring up all of the course details. Review the course detail to double check its what you're looking for. Then click on the blue button in the bottom right of the course description window that says, "Enroll."

- A popup window will confirm you are eligible for the course. Click "Enroll" to confirm.

- You're now enrolled in your "Regional Referee" course. If you've enrolled in the "Online + In-Person Companion Course" you'll have to do the online component before the in-person portion. You won't be allowed to take the in-person portion if you haven't completed the online portion. I recommend you do the online component just a couple of days before the in-person class. The information will be fresh in your mind and this will make the class much better. If you've enrolled in the "Full In-Person" course, they will cover everything at the class itself.

- To find the online modules, once you're in AYSOU, click "Training Library" on the left hand side. Then click on "View Courses" under the Refereeing category.

- You should now be able to find "Regional Referee Online + In-Person Companion Course." Be sure to print out or take a screen shot of the completion certificate you'll see upon completion of the Online portion.

- In additional to the "Regional Referee Training" you'll also have to take online safety courses: AYSO Safe Haven, Concussion Awareness, Sudden Cardiac Arrest and SafeSport. All of these can be found in AYSOU. I recommend printing or taking a screen shot of the completion screen on these modules as well.

- For the safety of our kids, all volunteers (except minors) have to be fingerprinted as well.

- Thats it. You're now officially an AYSO Regional Referee. Reach out to the Regional Referee Admin for your badge and uniform and instructions on how to assign yourself to a game, and get a referee mentor if you think that would be helpful!

If you have any issues, please email [email protected] and we will help you complete the process. We are here to help!
